FOUR PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR DOCTOR SHOPPING - Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Murphy, NC— A two week investigation conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrest of four individuals for doctor shopping.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division became aware that individuals residing in Cherokee County were illegally obtaining prescriptions for pain medications from multiple doctors. It was discovered that the individuals were obtaining the prescriptions from local doctors as well as doctors in Georgia, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. Additional information provided during the investigation revealed that many of the prescriptions were purchased using Medicare/Medicaid funds.

 Arrested in this investigation was:

Melissa Mcclure, a 43 year old Murphy North Carolina woman

David Smith, a 40 year old Marble North Carolina man

Courtney Gayson, a 26 year old Warne North Carolina woman

Kristian Devecki, a 28 year old Brasstown North Carolina woman

All four individuals were arrested on numerous counts of Doctor Shopping and taken before the North Carolina Magistrate who set bond. All four have court dates later this month.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is aggressively pursuing individuals who are participating in doctor shopping as it has been a factor in prescription drug diversion. Prescription drug diversion is simply the deflection of prescription drugs from medical sources into the illegal market. Prescription drugs can be a lucrative business, selling on the street for as much as 10 times what they are worth retail. An 80 mg OxyContin pill, for example, costs about $6 at a pharmacy and sells for $65 to $80 on the street.20.

To report illegal activity call 828-837-1344 or you can email to crime.tips@cherokeeconty-nc.gov.
